Connecting cameras without a static IP address
For the cloud to receive video, the stream has to leave your local network. That normally requires a public IP address and port forwarding to the camera. The OwlBox device removes that requirement: it sits inside the network and establishes the connection to the cloud itself.
No public IP
The connection is outbound, so there is no need to pay for a dedicated address or configure port forwarding.

Cameras remain on the local network; only the device reaches out. Automated scans have nothing to find.

Why a public IP is usually required
Home and office internet almost always runs behind NAT: the network has one external address, while devices inside have none reachable from outside. An inbound connection to a camera from the internet is impossible in that setup.
Cloud services most often pull the video themselves: they connect to the camera over RTSP and fetch the stream. For that the camera has to be reachable from outside — hence the requirement for a public IP with port forwarding.
Beyond the cost of the address, this approach brings two problems. The camera ends up exposed to the internet, with its web interface and RTSP port picked up by automated scans. And forwarding has to be configured for each camera separately.
What OwlBox does
OwlBox is a device installed inside your network, next to the router. It collects camera streams locally and sends them to the cloud over an outbound connection.
Outbound connections work through NAT the same way any website opens. That is why no public address and no port forwarding are needed.

Rented premises. Router control often sits with the landlord or the provider, and arranging port forwarding is awkward. The device does not need it.
